21 Website Details Every Artist Must Know

If you want a website, or already have one, here are a few things to watch out for:

1. Development - Have you thought about your exact reasons for putting up a site? What do you want visitors to do? Answering this one question will guide every single aspect of creating your website. Developing your site from soup to nuts is critically before you even think about hiring a web designer. Artists who want to direct visitors to galleries featuring their work will design a different site from artisans who want to sell directly to their customers. And be forewarned, most web designers do not have the marketing and promotion skills that drive specific aspects of the design. You will either need to educate yourself, or find someone else who knows.

2. Design - In Stanford University's "website trust-ability" research, graphic design came up as No.1. Pay attention to all your graphic elements: logo, colors, pictures, and icons. Do these fit together? Does everything fit the style of your work and personality? Does it overwhelm you with details, or under whelm you too little information. Does the design engage you; make you want to explore more? And most important, is the design taking the viewer's eye away from your art?

3. Keywords - Do you know what a keyword is? These are words that people, who are looking on the web, will type into a search engine (Google) to find what they want. Have you researched the best keywords for your site? Are you an abstract painter, a stone sculptor, a ceramic potter? If you don't use keywords relevant to your art, then your page will come up as the 2 millionth page on a search...even if it's on the 10th page, you will be losing potential customers at a staggering rate.

4. Immediate Access - Are you making the classic mistake of having an "Enter Here" page? Has a web designer talked you into putting Flash on your site? Either of these elements will cause your site to download slowly on some computers, and frustrate your visitors. Any designer worth their salt will make sure your site loads quickly. Ask for this upfront.

5. Home-Page Text - Are you saying, clearly, who you are, what you do or make, and why anyone landing on this page would want to stay on your website and poke around? On the web, where no one wants to figure out pictures (that equal a thousand words), but everyone wants information right now, you have to write clear text to go with your images. And is "Home" a menu option on every page so your visitor can get back there?

6. Navigation - Are your navigation buttons (all the "click here" functions) easy to read? Easy to click on? It may seem obvious, but I went to one artist site where my cursor kept bouncing off the rollover buttons. I didn't know if the links didn't work or the navigation was off. I gave up in frustration and left. If you click on a navigation button, do you go to the right page? And can you easily get back to where you started?

7. Directing Your Visitor - Once someone lands on the home page, do you direct them, exactly, to the next page you want them to go? Do you know where you want them to go? Do you know what you want them to do? (Return to #1)

8. Bells and Whistles - You have 3 to 9 seconds before a visitor jumps off your site. Are you doing anything to make them jump through hoops? Flash, roll-over navigation buttons, icon buttons that can't be immediately understood (one site reviewer calls these "mystery meat!") hidden menus: these all spell one word: goodbye.

9. Easy-on-the-Eyes - Are your web pages easy to read? If it isn't, will enlarging your page keep all the elements in place, or will they start overlapping each other? Is your information immediately accessible? Or do I have to poke around to figure it out. Is the size of your letters big enough for your audience (Baby Boomers need larger print and have more money to spend: is there a correlation here for you?)

10. Site Information - Have you written out all the basic information, about your work and what you do, so customers can figure out how to reach you, or buy your work, or go to an exhibit (or anywhere else you want them to go)? Are you aware that people care more about what they are going to get, than about what you do? Does your site reflect this basic fact?

11. Even Artists Need Headlines - Web surfers are looking for information. Even if your work is based on images, this is not enough. Where can I find your work? How do you make it? Have other people been happy with it? If you don't sell it, who does? Tell me simply, and up front: what do you do and why should I care.

12. Take Action - Do you make it clear what you want your visitor to do next? Pick up the phone and place an order? Read an article? Find out about an exhibit? Click on a specific link? If you don't tell people what to do next, how can they do it?

13. Meaningful Content - Virtual reality deprives us of all the normal "body" markers we use to evaluate another person: tone of voice, eye contact, body language. The next best thing is comments (testimonials) or case studies, which tell people that you are who you claim, and that you deliver whatever promise is implied on your site.

14. Follow-up - Is there a reason for a visitor to come back, or a way for you to keep in touch. Ask them if they want updates on your new work, or new exhibits so you can capture their email and permission to contact them. Or offer some goodie in exchange for their name and email. One artist I know made a great ebook on color. Without a database of new contacts, your website is barely working for you.

15. Contacting You - Is it easy to find out how to contact you?

Have you included phone numbers, a snail-mail address, email forms?

16. Ordering Your Work - If you are selling directly, have you been 100% clear about the process? (One artist had order forms, but no obvious prices. I had to hunt everywhere to find them.) Is your form simple? Do you have a FAQ page (Frequently Asked Questions)?

17. Shopping Cart - Are you set up for impulse buying? A lot of people whip out a credit card on the spot when they see something they really want on the web. If all you offer is a phone number, or mail/fax purchases, how many midnight buyers might you be missing without an easy, instant way to pay you?

18. Care-for Info - Does your work need specific care instructions? Are they easy to understand? Is this important to know before someone buys from you?

19. Link Popularity - Having links from your web site to other web sites increases your visibility on search engines, and creates a higher listing. Any place that carries your work, writes about your work, or where you've written about your work, should be linked to your site.

20. Updating - Besides keeping you in the limelight with search engines (a higher ranking), updating your site on a regular basis lets people know you're still invested in what you do. Can you imagine walking into your local grocery store and finding year-old product on the shelves? It's the same idea with website content. Nobody wants old stuff. A blog is perfect for this, and easy as pie to install. In fact, these days, you can have a blog be your website.

21. Kill the Black - I know you wish you didn't hear that. Black is so arty cool, groovy traditional arty cool, arty arty arty cool. True: on paper, on canvass. But not on a computer screen. Let me explain. It's all about the light source. Black works when eyes can do their biological "adjust to incremental changes in light source" thing. But a computer screen is a static light source, so it puts a huge strain on our eyes. Black is like, well... a black hole on a computer screen. It just sucks our eyes right in. And this is not good for your art. Eye suck means not much is left over to share with your art. So, you just might want to give up arty-arty and keep your art center stage instead. Also, black is overpowering (part of why it's so cool). Do you want your artwork overpowered? Aren't you actually responding to the blackness, and not your art, when you say how good your art looks next to black? Kill the black. Long live your art.

Last Supper Question - Who Attended the Last Supper and Why?

What is luxury? Certainly, luxury has a lot in common with rarity, and while the world's finest mechanical watches may be made in editions limited to a thousand, a hundred, thirty pieces, a work of art is absolutely unique and so acquires value in the eyes of collectors. Damian Hirst's diamond-encrusted skull titled "For the love of God" cost £14 million to make and was put on sale at £50 million, but even more remarkable in terms of acquired value was the Codex Leicester, or Codex Hammer, thirty-three drawings by Leonardo da Vinci which were bought by Bill Gates in 1994 for $30 million.

So, if luxury has something in common with rarity, then the original DaVinci Last Supper enables everyone to experience the ultimate luxury in art, because this work is absolutely unique, and will never be moved to another museum for a temporary exhibition. It is indissolubly tied to the walls of the room in which it was painted, the refectory of a Dominican monastery in central Milan. Santa Maria delle Grazie.

It is common knowledge that this Renaissance Last Supper is in a bad state, but it is in better condition now than it has been for almost five hundred years. Leonardo painted it from 1494 to 1498, and his finished work sent shock waves through the Italian Renaissance and the world of art at that time. But just a few decades after it had been finished, it began to deteriorate. Often, people think that this was caused by an experimental technique invented by the artist that went wrong, but this is not actually the case.

In the German city of Erfurt, the Catholic cathedral has a large fresco depicting Saint Christopher, in excellent condition, recorded as having been painted "a l'huile sur le mur prepare au moyen d'une couche d'huile et d'une couche de blanc de plomb". This corresponds to the preparation of the wall on which the Last Supper was painted, a very fine plaster mixed with an oily substance, possibly wax, and then coated with a layer of white lead. The technique therefore was not an invention by Leonardo, but a method that had been described previously, in particular, by Cennino Cennini in the 14th century. In fact, according to Cennini, the traditional fresco painting technique, using pigments direct on wet plaster, was the safest, but had the disadvantage of restricting the range of colours that could be used. Cennini in fact recommended the use of pittura a secco, namely painting onto dry plaster, for the final touches alone. Leonardo had evidently heard about the techniques used in northern Europe, and decided to use the oil-based technique for his fresco. This was also important for his desire to work slowly on the painting, giving him sufficient time to develop the gradual shading or chiaroscuro that was essential in his style.

Unfortunately, the wall was subject to rising damp, and the situation was made worse by the fact that on the other side of the wall were the kitchens, where the food eaten by the monks in the refectory was prepared. In the years following the completion of the work, the moisture in the wall repelled the oily ground, and it began to crack, fragmenting the painted surface. In many areas, the individual pieces of plaster between the cracks took on a concave shape, like a series of tiny shells, within which dirt accumulated. During the innumerable restoration operations that have been performed over the centuries, the painting was scraped with spatulas and metal brushes in an attempt to force the plaster back into shape, but this just damaged the edges of the individual concave chips, exposing the lead white ground. Layers of resin and glue were painted over it in an attempt to stabilize the layer of pigment. On several occasions, painters were actually summoned to bring the work back to its original glory by painting over it. By 1969, many scholars believed that there was nothing at all left of Leonardo's original work, but just accumulated dirt and the paint added during successive repainting operations.

Only in 1977 did the first trial areas of cleaning demonstrate that it was possible to remove the extraneous layers and reach Leonardo's original pigment. And this is what was done in the operation that lasted from 1978 to 1999.

Another event in the history of this painting proves that its survival up until today is something of a miracle. In August 1943, the refectory received a direct hit from a bomb dropped in one of the three air-raids planned to accelerate the Kingdom of Italy's Armistice (signed on 3rd September). The blast completely destroyed the roof and one of the long walls of the refectory. The two end walls - one with the Last Supper, the other with Montorfano's Crucifixion - survived, and the paintings remained intact because they had been protected by a wall of sandbags from floor to ceiling. It is no surprise, considering its turbulent history, that its conditions are closely monitored. Visits are limited to 25 people every 15 minutes, which is why pre-booking is necessary.

Before entering the hall itself, visitors pass through a series of glass-encased rooms that delicately remove excess humidity and dust by means of a pressure differential. In other words, you are hoovered, but very gently. Inside the refectory, there is nothing. Nothing except Leonardo's painting, and Montorfano's on the opposite wall. At this point there is another analogy with a valuable mechanical timepiece. You can only appreciate its value if you understand something of its incredible complication. Just as to the eyes of a layman, superficially there doesn't seem to be all that much difference between a Piaget and a Swatch, the Last Supper runs the risk of leaving a visitor with the feeling "is that it?" Worse, a lack of information leaves ample space for writers - most famously Dan Brown and The Da Vinci Code, but many other even worse authors who wanted their share of this dubious glory - to reinterpret the painting as they wish. And so, according to Dan Brown, the feminine-looking figure to the left of Christ is not actually one of the twelve Apostles, but Mary Magdalene. This immediately prompts a Brown sceptic such as myself to ask, so where did the twelfth disciple go? Out buying the pizzas, or just late for dinner?

The truth of the matter is that the painting is a true grand complication. There is so much meaning, on several different layers of complexity, that any of the modern reinterpretations pales in comparison. The Last Supper question is one that has never been comprehensively answered.

The first level of meaning is the scene itself. Leonardo chose an exact moment in the Gospel narration of the Last Supper. "In truth, I tell you, one of you will betray me..." says Jesus, who is shown in the act of speaking. This revelation surges outwards amongst the Disciples who react, each in his own way, coalescing them into four groups of three. Christ has an expression of resigned sadness and at the same time, an assured and regal poise. He gestures to the wine with his right hand, to the bread with his left, instituting the fundamental Christian ritual of the Eucharist. The movement of the Disciples isolates Jesus, leaving Him alone at the centre of the composition. He is the only person to have a geometrical shape, an almost perfect equilateral triangle. He is also the only person to wear robes in red and dark blue. This is a tradition that descends from Medieval traditions in painting and stained glass.

The most expensive pigments to make were deep blue and bright red, requiring pulverized lapislazzuli and gold respectively, and so over the centuries, these pigments were used only for the most important figures in the composition. Leonardo painted the Apostles after having made countless drawings, some of which have survived in his notebooks. One preparatory drawing shows the Apostles labeled with their names. In fact, each Apostle had acquired a sort of standard appearance throughout the history of art up until that point, so that a person could recognize them in paintings and frescoes. In the same way, saints and martyrs were often depicted with certain objects that left no doubt as to their identity, such as John the Baptist's rough animal-skin clothes, St. Peter's keys, St. Catherine's wheel and so forth. And so we know who attended the Last Supper - namely the identity of the Apostles - from the facial expressions that Leonardo gave them. On the far left, Bartholomew is rising to his feet, incredulous. James Minor is seated, trying to attract Peter's attention with a hand on his shoulder. Andrew has both hands in the air, a gesture still used in Italy today to mean "it wasn't me."

The next group of three is complicated. Judas is a dark figure, leaning back from his position close to Jesus and over the table, so that his head is actually the next, the fourth, in the sequence. He is clutching a bag of money in his right hand, while his left is about to take a piece of bread. In fact, Jesus would shortly reveal to John that the traitor would be he who would dip his bread into the same bowl as Him. Judas is distanced from the other Apostles by his dark, shadowed complexion, and by an apparently broken nose. Behind his back there is a knife held by a mysterious hand - more on this in another article.

Peter, the next in the sequence, is leaning in the opposite direction to Judas, so that although he is sitting next to Andrew - they were brothers - his head is very close to John the Evangelist. This is because, in the Gospel narration, Peter is asking John to ask Jesus who the traitor would be. John was the youngest Apostle, which was why he was traditionally shown without a beard.

Then, on the right of Jesus, there is Thomas, pointing upwards with a finger. This gesture was familiar to monks during the Renaissance: as meals in the refectory had to be taken in silence, in order to indicate God there was a conventional sign, thumb and index finger extended, the others closed. James Major is next, in a green robe. Philip is gesturing with both hands towards his heart, saying in tortured self-doubt, "Could it be I?" Matthew, the only educated man amongst the Apostles, is debating the matter, hands outstretched towards Jesus while he himself is deep in conversation with the other two Apostles in the right-hand group, Thaddeus, and lastly Simon.

Leonardo brought about many small revolutions with this painting, advances that may seem insignificant to us in our scientific and relatively unspiritual age, but that at the time were momentous. Firstly, he completely broke with tradition as regards the position of Judas. Painters before Leonardo made sure that Judas was very different to the rest of the Apostles, often by placing him alone, on our side of the table, or by making him the only one without a halo. Leonardo puts him together with the rest, one of the twelve, part of the overall sequence, and none of his figures have a halo. Secondly, this is probably the first painting in which an artist has tried to depict the variety of human psychology. Each Apostle reacts in his own, unique way, and Leonardo depicts this using all the methods possible, facial expression, bodily position, and above all, the gestures of the hands. Third, the question of perspective. Leonardo was a master in this fundamental Renaissance rediscovery, and in this painting he both broke the rules, and used it to add extra significance to the work. He broke the rules, because when you are standing the in the refectory, the perspective seems wrong. The upper edge of the tapestries ought to follow straight from the ceiling moulding in the real room, but they don't.

This is because Leonardo wanted to paint the fresco at a raised level, both so that it could be seen by all the monks in the room, and because the Gospel describes the Last Supper as having taken place in a room on an upper floor. If he had used perspective correctly, we would have seen nothing of what is on the table, and the table itself would have obscured most of the figure's bodies. So he painted the scene with a perspective view that would be correct if the observer were at a height of about twelve feet. The lines of perspective, the tapestries and the ceiling beams, converge at a vanishing point that is just above Jesus' right eye. On his temple. "Tempio" in Italian. The word has the same double meaning in both languages, and it succinctly indicates that Christ is the originator of the new faith, the new church.

Leonardo took his revolution a step further. (I should warn you that from here on, I am voicing my own ideas. You decide). The parallel between the twelve Apostles and the twelve signs of the zodiac had been noted prior to Leonardo, but no-one had ever expressed it in paintings, partly because the Church didn't approve of the contamination of doctrine with astrology. So Leonardo put in some subtle clues. Andrew, third from left, two hands in the air, Gemini, the twins, double sign. Judas, the fourth in the sequence, symbolizes a word that had had three meanings from Ancient Greek times: karkinos, the crab, tumours, and the zodiac constellation. Cancer. Then Peter, fiery temper, a great mane of hair: Leo. And then, the sixth in the sequence, a pale, delicate, feminine face: Virgo, of course! On the other side, Thomas, doubting Thomas, whose raised finger alludes (as well as to the Divinity in the sky) to that fact that later he would say that he would not believe until he had placed his finger into the wounds on Christ's hands, is in the position of Libra, the sign of the zodiac hallmarked by perennial doubt. Second from last, Thaddeus is holding his hand in a cup shape. Aquarius, the water-bearer.

It's true, not all the figures have such clear astrological attributes, but I think that there is enough to corroborate the theory. But, one may ask, why did Leonardo want to risk getting into trouble again with the Church for his unorthodox approach to subject matter? Basically, Leonardo didn't want to paint just a moment in time, important though that moment was. He also wanted to incorporate the world view corresponding to the Neoplatonic philosophy developed by Marsilio Ficino and his Florentine Academy. His room becomes man's universe, with Christ at the centre, and numerological symbology used to symbolize the elements, the divine creation, the zodiac and the planets.

Another revolution: Leonardo saves Judas. I mentioned the knife that is behind his back, another traditional element in Last Supper paintings, indicating man's hostility to the traitor and suggesting the fact that Judas would die soon after. While at first glance, Peter seems to be holding the knife, the impossible anatomical position of this hand shows that in actual fact, the hand grasping the knife belongs to no-one at all, and that Peter is restraining it from its murderous action. Leonardo seems to be saying, by placing Judas with the rest of the Apostles, that there is an element of evil in all of us, and that we have to accept it just as we accept death and suffering. We cannot excise evil from the human race by executing a sinner. Hands off Cain, many centuries in advance.

This, then, is one interpretation of this extraordinary painting. While I've taken two hours to write this article, Leonardo spent four years on the painting, and there's more, much, much more to be told...

My New Friend Redraw

Redraw stood out in my July 9 Daily Racing Form past performances but not for the usual reasons. This 10 year old chestnut gelding brought out the sympathetic side of this horse racing analyst. For one thing, he was a ten year old race horse still working hard at the race track. While the big name thoroughbreds are rushed off to the breeding shed or the November Bloodstock sale for the fillies and mares, Redraw was a gelding whose only course of action was to keep slugging it out in the claiming ranks at Canterbury Park. With 45 lifetime starts and $102,544 in earnings, Redraw's best days were clearly behind him, but he was still making fans out of people like me.

My wife and I love Canterbury Park and we happily spend as many days as possible in the summer attending the live racing meet in Shakopee, Minnesota. I study my Daily Racing Form as we sit at table 237 on the clubhouse level where the simulcast players and the serious racing fans are mixed in with the special events groups. For a 33 year old who grew up in the city and has zero horse experience, I fell in love with the sport five years ago from the moment I had the chance to see these amazing thoroughbreds up close and personal. Kari and I make it a habit to go down to the paddock in between every race to get a good look at the horses as they are saddled and as they parade around the paddock. When I saw Redraw's past performances in the Form, I told my wife that we have to go down to the paddock and keep our eye on the 2 horse.

Some horses catch my eye because they are the progeny of a prominent sire like Smart Strike or our personal favorite horse Monarchos. Other horses standout because of their connections. It wasn't his pedigree or his Beyer Speed Figure or his Tomlinson ratings that caught my eye. Instead it was the heartbreaking fact that he finished 79 and a ½ lengths out of first place three races back. I immediately felt bad for this aging veteran of the track. Prior to this 79 and ½ lengths back eighth place finish, Redraw had finished 3rd but the comment section of Daily Racing Form continued to break my heart when it simply reported "Lame, vanned off." Redraw immediately became my focus for this 8th race of the day, a $4,000 Claiming event. I wasn't going to make any wagers on him. All I wanted him to do was finish the race. Just finish the race safely. Second, I didn't want him to be too far back. No more 79 and ½ length losses. Redraw's goal for the day would be a) finish the race and b) try and stay near the pack. Suddenly this horse brought out the true horse lover in me and made me look at this race as if I was the track veterinarian, not caring about the order in which the horses finish only how and whether they finish.

On this mid-July night of racing, Redraw finished the race. He stayed with the pack and finished second to last bringing out a smile from my wife and I as if we were two proud parents looking on. He stayed close to the pack, he finished the race, and he appeared to walk off the track safe and sound. But as a ten year old gelding, my thoughts became consumed with one concern. What would happen to Redraw once his owners or trainers decided he was done racing. Clearly one look at the Daily Racing Form past performances shows a recent history of injury and near last place finishes where he was often distanced from the leaders. This horse that had just become my sympathetic favorite may have an uncertain future whenever his racing career ends.

A Horseplayer Learns about Racehorse Retirement

On a vacation two years back, I did what any horse lover would do. I planned a trip to Lexington where my wife and I went to morning workouts at Keeneland, ate at the track kitchen, and took tours of Three Chimneys, Lanes End, and Claiborne Farm. We took pictures of Monarchos, had our picture taken with Pleasant Tap at Lane's End, and relaxed in our vacation rental watching Seabiscuit and Dreamer. But in between all those events, we spent part of a day at Old Friends. We visited Old Friends, I heard the story of Ferdinandand Exceller, I read After the Finish Line by Bill Heller, and suddenly my love for horse racing and thoroughbreds was taking on a whole new direction. Now I find myself aspiring to start an organization for retired thoroughbred racehorses or at least fulfill my dream of owning a horse by going through one of the many great adoption programs that exists for retired racehorses. But right now, I live in a one bedroom apartment in a city of 3.5 million. Not the best environment for owning a horse, not to mention the fact that I have zero horse experience and can barely pay to take care of myself let alone me and a thoroughbred. In spite of my present circumstances, I still became increasingly concerned for the welfare of Redraw and wanted to keep my eyes on him. There was zero chance that Redraw would end up stabling next to two-time Breeders Cup Champion DaHoss and racing legend Cigar at the Kentucky Horse Park. My only hope was to tell the story of this 10 year old gelding that inspired me and brought out the sympathetic side of this horseplayer. I entered him in my horses to watch section of youbet.com and I studied his past performances through Daily Racing Form.

Redraw: From Breeding to 10 year old Veteran

Sired by Repriced, Redraw is one of 303 foals, 234 (77%) of which were starters. He was one of the 160 winners Repriced produced having broken his maiden September 15, 2001 in the 9th race at Kentucky Downs. Going 6 furlongs on the turf in a 28K Maiden Special Weight race, he closed steadily from 8th place and ten lengths back to 8th place and 5 lengths back to 7th place and only 3 and a quarter lengths back. He then surged from 7th to first winning by a length and a half earning a 62 Beyer Speed Figure on the grass, hopefully making his grand sire Roberto proud. Redraw also has some Northern Dancer in his pedigree having Deputy Minister as his broodmare sire. Bred in Florida by Glen Hill Farm, Redraw was foaled on January 31, 1999.

He ran at Churchill Downs. He won at both Arlington Park and the Fairgrounds where track announcer John G. Dooley was calling his name. Over his veteran career, he compiled five wins, three seconds, and four third place finishes in 45 career starts. On October 24, 2004 he was claimed for $20,000 and took residence with new trainer Wayne Catalano. He went through a stretch in 2003-2004 where he routinely posted Beyer Speed Figures in the high 70s or low 80s. He spent the bulk of his career at Arlington Park and Hawthorne in allowance races or claiming races anywhere from $30,000-$50,000. On Christmas Eve 2004, at the Fairgrounds, he put up a 78 Beyer Speed Figure in a $7,500 claiming race and won by a length. This was the last win he recorded.

Falling in Love with Horse Racing and the Claiming Game

Canterbury Park is never going to be confused for Del Mar, Saratoga, or Keeneland. Yet, it is very special to me because it is where I was introduced to horse racing. A buy one get one free coupon encouraged us to give it a try. We sat at the "New to the Races Seminar" taught by Jeff Maday. We even filled out a pick 6 wager back when we filled it out like a scantron sheet from a high school biology exam. Canterbury Park has a lot of lower level claiming races, but I still love the racing there and I have also taken a keen interest in quarter horse racing, since they also run quarter horses and a few graded stakes races at Canterbury. I have begun to follow Mac Robertson and jockeys such as Derek Bell and Scott Stevens. Leading quarter horse trainer Ed Ross Hardy is among my trainers to watch on youbet.com and Redraw is among my horses to watch. A horse that I admire and love, and a horse that I hope gets a happy, peaceful retirement because he always tried hard on the track. He won three races at glitzy Arlington Park and even had pilots such as the likes of Hall of Fame jockey Earlie Fires and current leading rider at Arlington Park E.T. Baird. He posted his career best Beyer Speed Figure of 89 on a muddy track in a $35,000 Claiming Race under a ride by Earlie Fires. And maybe his most noble effort was a third place finish at Fonner Park on March 5, 2005 in a $25,000 Claiming Race. He closed the gap from 9th, to 6th, to 5th, to 4th, before finally finishing 3rd just two and a quarter lengths behind the winner. His effort was noble especially considering the Daily Racing Form comments for this race simply say, "Lame, vanned off." He was laid up for over three years before coming back in September 2008 and finishing 8th out of 9 and a disappointing 79 and ½ lengths out of the first. No amount of research could help me find what type of injury he sustained. And though he still tries hard every outing, he clearly is not the same either because of age or because of injury, or both. He doesn't have the pedigree of Empire Maker and no one will ever confuse his on track winnings for those of Lava Man. Nevertheless, he put in a solid career as a thoroughbred racehorse. Many thoroughbreds never make it as starters and fewer still are the ones that actually tally a win. Redraw did both. He battled injury and came back. He continued to compete and put forth his best effort every race. Like every thoroughbred racehorse, I hope he finds a happy and relaxing retirement coming his way soon. And if I had a barn and a few acres for him to turnout, Redraw would be retiring happily with me. Until then, I will keep him on my thoughts and in my youbet.com horses to watch, and hope for the best.

Epilogue

Following the initial story of Redraw after seeing him on July 9, 2009 at Canterbury Park, he ran two more times to date. He ran July 24th finishing 10th out of 10 horses in a $7500 Claiming Race and he finished 8th out of an eight horse field August 1st in a $10,000 Claiming Race. Both times I watched not from my carousel at the simulcast center but from the reserved tables overlooking the race track. Redraw is typically so far out of the pack that you can never keep tabs on him from the TV monitor. So I watch from high above and keep my focus on him to make sure he finishes safe and sound. I recently read a story of a horseplayer who won a large bet and used his winnings to retire an 11 year old racehorse still working the claiming ranks of his home track Suffolk Downs. While the story is old, the inspiration was there. I'm also inspired by Old Friends, the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program, and the Lone Star Outreach to Place Ex-Racehorses (LOPE Texas) to name a few. I love reading everything I can about thoroughbred horse racing and I'm inspired when I read stories about Arthur Hancock and how he saved his Kentucky Derby winner Gato del Sol from an unsure future. Whether it's hitting a pick 3 at Arlington Park and using the winnings to retire Redraw or trying to start an organization for retired racehorses on my own, my love and admiration for horses like Redraw is growing everyday. With the Canterbury Park season winding down, I'm hoping he finishes the season safe and sound. And until I hit that large Pick 3 or until a group of horse lovers can retire Redraw as a group effort, I hope he returns as an 11 year old gelding next season. And I will be there watching with a sympathetic eye and hopeful heart that his happy retirement comes soon.

Dinnerware - The Present Trends

Art is what gives satisfaction to our sensibility and it truly knows no boundaries. Art has come down to our tables in the form of exclusive and artistic dinnerware. Dinnerware embodies in itself art, history, and industry. As an art, it is conceived and given shape, color, pattern and design by the artist and then is manufactured by dinnerware industry in such a manner that it doesn't lose its functionality and can be used for intended purpose over a period of years, and even centuries, thus creating history. In fact, decorative art is strongly reflected in the history of dinnerware. Whether it be cubist or impressionistic, classical or deco, Mediterranean or Oriental, decorative dinnerware has always been there in a wide variety of range as an everyday item and also as a collectible.

Present Trends of Dinnerware

During its journey, dinnerware has been through many changes. The present trends of dinnerware can only tell whether the artistic inclination remains in it even today or not.

Vibrant Colors and Patterns: - Dinnerware in bright oranges, yellows, gold metallics and blues are giving warmth and life to the subdued background of homes. Ethnic prints including Native American patterns, African motifs and Asian batiks truly stand apart against the vibrant color scheme.

Browns and Blacks:- It's true that white will never lose its place but for a while, browns and blacks are in limelight. Brown with all its shades, from dusky to coffee and even dark chocolate, are in great demand. These colors are even contrasted with colors like yellow, blue and green to bring dramatic effects. Black is also there to shine with pride. Contrasted mainly with whites and sometimes with golden shades, black is here to stay.

Eco Dinnerware: - The passion for clean environment has led to recycled dinnerware which is fast catching up with the masses. Apart from being made from recycled products, these items reflect shades of green- jades and olives- along with attractive patterns representing nature in form of leaves and other foliage etc.

Fancy Grapics: - Odd, unconventional, peculiar and even hand drawn whimsical and abstract graphics are gaining unimaginable popularity. They are, all the more, adding interest to our tables.

Irregular Shapes: - Any shape other than round is in. Although the standard round plates and bowls can never vanish but the shapes like star, squares, geometric shapes, organic shapes are fast making ways into hotels, restaurants, home kitchens and dining tables. Appetizers are now served on rectangular plates, and entrees in oversize bowls. Even colors of dishes are considered while finalizing dessert plates, such as a plate with rose-colored outer edge and gold trim for creme brulee!

Are you now thinking whether we really eat with our eyes first? Yes, of course!

How to Paint Women Without Clothes

After the onslaught of new ideas about human psychology by Sigmund Freud, the depiction of men and women without clothes has become acceptable among the people. Accordingly the mindset of the artists showing various aspects attached with the figurative painting has changed considerably. The clan of artists of twentieth century has proved itself a bolder one than the previous painters. Painters like Picasso have paved a totally different way. Their themes have become richer and the depiction of passion deeper.

It would be easy for a master artist like Paul Gauguin or Jean Ingres to complete a painting with one go or within a period of two or three days. But such an artist would not do so. Before a seriously involved artist go to paint on a canvas, he or she would go through the analytical drawing of his dream project. He would envision the final painting to be done. After considering all the technical aspects like the portions of canvass to be allotted to a particular object, colour scheme to be applied, and sizes of the brushes to use, the master artist would deep his first brush into blob of colour.

When a master artist takes brushes and palate in hand, his thinking would not be limited to only the technical aspects of painting. He foresees about the things that would make the painting a visual image of beauty. He would dream about a situation; he would conceive in his mind the map of the scene to be recreated; and finally he would consider about infusing the feel of air the frame would possess.

The work of a figurative painter becomes more complicated one, especially while painting women and men in their natural beauty. Among other genres of painting, the figurative painting demands much care from an artist. It is not that one has to be a master artist like Rubens or William Adolf Bouguereau. But recreating the image of a person wearing no clothes is not an easy project. It requires much skill and creative concentration to upload the physical likeness of a model on to canvas.

When an artist wants depiction of a woman without clothes, his or her work involves certain extra aspects, too. It would involve portrayal of a crowd of objects lying near her bare body. Painters would consider the specific positions of these things lying in surrounding spaces. The surface of bed sheets, the ornaments tumbled on floor; and the creases on bed left by a person who might have just gone out: these are the elements that add to the seductiveness of a figure to be painted. A master artist would collect all of these visual pieces and upload whole set of the things onto one frame.

How to Draw a Monstrous Nightmare

The success of the 3D animation movie 'How to Train Your Dragon' has regenerated public interest in the original novel by Cressida Cowell. Nearly all of its lead characters have become a craze among children. This does not apply only to the protagonists, but also the main villains, the Monstrous Nightmare dragon breed. These destructive creatures reflect their true nature in their appearance. If your wish to portray a Monstrous Nightmare in action on your drawing board, you need a very good understanding of proportions and alignments. The following systematic guide is designed to help you bring the 'villain' on your drawing board:

• Inspiration. Consider obtaining an image of a Monstrous Nightmare, which you can use as a reference for your work. You are more likely to get 'Fireworm,' the leading dragon of this genre. The picture will serve two main purposes. Firstly, it will ensure that you do not become lost somewhere in between, especially, as these characters are new to the audience. Secondly, you will be able to replicate its finer details. You can make it simple by picking an easy to draw image or by simplifying the background scene.

• Base drawing. You do not need drawing instruments to develop a frame sketch. Primarily, the Monstrous Nightmare shall be a combination of circles, curves, and lines. Study the body position and posture of the creature. Keep in mind the overall size of the figure and the relative proportions of the different components. Draw with a freehand. Start with a small circle for the head portion. On the lower side of it, extend a U-shape for its jaw. Draw a long curve that begins with the circle, follows the centre of the figure, and ends at the tip of the tail. Mark the position of legs through two short, angular lines. Similarly, mark two angular lines covering the wingspan.

• Details. Taking the top-down approach, draw the outlines for the eye and the nose area. Now, begin adding the eye details, nostrils, and pointed spikes on the top of the head. Draw sharp teeth and a tongue in the portion outlined for the jaws. Add body to the neck area and remember to draw spikes. Increase the thickness of the wing lines and create large bat-like wings. Next, sketch the abdomen, legs, and tail. Have an eye for details and do not miss features, like claws, rib lines, and striped pattern on the body, to mention some.

• Shading and colors. It will be a better option to color your drawing, instead of shading it with pencil. This way you can produce such dramatic effects of fiery tones and light, which would not be possible otherwise. Use black, browns, and reds to highlight the contours and you are done!

How To Figure Out Your Figurines In One Easy Lesson

This isn't your childhood collection of Burger King's Star Wars action figures. This isn't a long-forgotten Beanie Babies plushie. When your artistic taste has matured enough to the point of considering adding figurine art to your home, you are ready to learn about kilns and firing techniques and enamel paints. It will all add to the enjoyment of your collection, believe me! So your celadon figurine has its unique sheen from the iron oxide in its glaze? Now you can discourse in a learned fashion to your guests who admire your collection. You may even interest them in collecting figurines for themselves. You learn that the shades of green coming from a celadon's reducing atmosphere kiln evoked the most subtle shades of the treasured stone, jade, to the figurine maker, and that if the glaze cracks in a certain pleasing way, the term is 'crackle glaze' and the piece is even more valuable.

When you move along to the western figurine houses of Royal Doulton or Hummel, you delve into British and German history of craftsmanship, loving attention to fine detail that is at the heart of producing a piece of art of which to be proud. Royal Doulton, in operation since 1815, produces figurines with astonishing moods and poses, all rendered in fine porcelain with a glaze that mimics the glow of life. Hummel figurines utilize the charm of Sister Berta Hummel's original designs and bring her drawings to three-dimensional verisimilitude by the techniques of bisque firing and outward glazing. This enables the collector to see in the final piece the depiction of rosy-cheeked childhood which Hummel portrayed so well.

Your figurines need a special place of display, something that will catch the eye of the visitor and yet protect the delicacy of the pieces. A shelf with a lip will prevent untimely tipping of the fragile pieces, at the very least, yet even better is a glassed-in display case similar to a museum's place of honor. Interior lighting of the case is important, as with all art, because direct sunlight, unless in very limited amounts, is detrimental to the paints. You will enjoy your figurine art much more if you aren't worrying about their longevity! And you do want them to last as long as possible, because what is more satisfying than to give them to a cherished relative who will treasure them as much as you do? If they are protected well, they will provide a legacy to your loved ones.

For the moment, however, you will want more and more figurines to add to your grouping, until you have satisfied that collecting urge for the moment. Now you have themes in your collection, perhaps an animal theme, or a depiction from your childhood memories, such as attending the circus. Why not group your figurines in small settings of three or four, similar in subject? For instance, the circus motif could be an elephant standing on its hind legs, a aged balloon lady dispensing balloons to eager little hands and in the background, a juggling clown, surely the most recognizable of the circus folk. Naturally, your personal taste will circumscribe any such groupings into those most pleasurable to you. It is part of the joy of having a large collection of figurines to vary their display every so often, as the season or your mood changes. You will find that figurines bring a room to life in a unique way.

Artist Review - David's "The Annunciation"

"The Annunciation" by David is quite incredible! I sat for two hours, on the floor of the Met jotting notes, in order to fully appreciate the painting's message. I have truly been inspired with what I was able to see for myself, as well as engaging the various persons stopping to view such a masterpiece.

David is a brilliant painter, he was born 1455 and died in 1523 and his work is "Netherlandish." "The Annunciation" is merely one part of an entire multi-storied polyptych. The medium is oil on wood and was originally commissioned in 1506, by Vincenzo Sauli; a wealthy banker and diplomat for the high alter of the Benedictine Abby Church of San Gerolamo Della Cervara, near Genoa. The ensemble created a synthesis of northern and Italian artistic modes. David achieved a rare balance between detailed description and elevated exposition.

To begin, "The Annunciation" is actually two panels standing side by side, complimenting one another, with the action of the Holy Spirit approaching Mary to impregnate her with the Christ child, through the gesture by the angel of annunciation. This is a common motif among many Renaissance artists, but David really captures the moment. The two paintings are an estimated 3' x 4' each, and are spaced well, at approximately 8" for full effect.

The angel of annunciation stands alone on the left panel. He is dressed in soft-toned, light blue, raiment that achieves a "flowing" action about him. The almost iridescent cape, of red and green color, is inscribed with Latin phrasing that disappears within the folds and creases. Motion is achieved through the gesture of action, as the angel signals the dove, the Holy Spirit in the right panel, to approach the virgin.

Action is further hinted at, by the bent knees, as seen through the clothing, as well as with very distinct gestures from his hands. By creating a mood or anticipatory action, David lets the angel tell whoever is viewing the painting, that he captured that moment in time as he saw it happen. The gesture of command with the angel's right hand sets a triangular format between the two paintings. It connects them and allowed for me to follow from one panel to the next. His left hand begins a secondary triangle, but with the addition of a three sectioned golden scepter. The scepter is extended upward, toward the area between the paintings, and appears to be pointing toward the heavens. The top of the scepter has a pointed crown at the top, with a spiral mid section, and finally a smooth handgrip at the bottom.

The room itself is a contemporary setting for that time. It is of a simple design with one double pained window and almost no furniture items. The window itself is split into four wooden storm panels. The two bottom ones are closed and locked, with a simple metal latch, but the top panes reveal a view upward into the heavens through lattice made of metal as well. Nothing recognizable can be seen through the glass, other than the soft tones of a blue sky with clouds. The upper storm doors open inward, invitingly towards the angel.

The flooring in both rooms is comprised of a type of small section tile that alternates between an almost ivory tone, and is complimented by a soft rose colored alternation in the concentric pattern. Additionally, laid within the tiles, is another pattern also. The other pattern is set, (alternating), with a softer blue that the angel's raiment and a light shade of green. The tile lines, as with the overall perspective of the pieces, head toward the top area between the paintings, following the line of the scepter. Although the story is supposed to be in the same room, David seems to have made the same room, in actuality, two separate places. One note of importance is that in the right panel, the floor on which Mary is has a hole on lower left corner on the bottom. There is a stone barrier, or edging, that seems to allow for her separation from the dark void that is visible through that hole. I feel that David is attempting to show that her separation is from the world below, and the annunciation is occurring on a higher plane than that of that same ungodly world.

The walls on each painting are primarily set with wooden panels, but the left portrait has bluish fresco-type cement topping it about halfway up. The blue of the cement is slightly darker than that of the angel's clothing, and allows again, for the angel to stand out from the painting, and out from the corner of the room itself. There is a fireplace behind the angel, although he stands before it and blocks one's view, in order to break up the flatness of the wall.

The expression on the angel's face seems as if he is saying, even without words, that everything will be fine; a sort of warmth emanating from within. Aiding the warmth, are two burgundy pillows, lying across the bench along the wall. They appear very soft and comfortable, as with the scene. In turn, they connect the left half of the dyad, with the right, by completing a line, (horizontal), across to the top of the small wooden table. On that table, is a bible supported by a third, smaller pillow that sits before the Virgin. It's open to no particular page, but the traditional rendition of David's painting, such as Robert Campin's "Merode Altarpiece," would be consistent with the scene as written: The bible is either open to or implied to the Annunciation. The pages are flapping randomly, and do not reflect any specific point in the book.

The main path of sight originates from the angel, then crossing to the right painting and focusing on the Holy Spirit, the dove, finally to the Virgin. The dove is positioned just off center and above Mary's head in the top of the scene. The flight-path of that bird leads the ultimate destination to be with Mary. There is a golden radiation with a bluish hue surrounding the bird, from a source behind it. The Virgin has the same radiation emanating from behind her head also, but hers is not as brilliant, and lacks the bluish hue.

Mary's face appears somber, and quite possibly scared. Her hands lay crossed, open over her chest, as she kneels before the Bible. Her gaze stares right at whoever views this work, but it also stares past them as well. I feel, that the face can be drawn out from the scene further, by the dress she wears. That dress is a brilliant and rich royal blue color, with a golden design along its border. As with the angel's raiment, the drapery folds created on both figures, is comparable to those of Jan Van Eyck. They produce a depth and feel about them, as with all the fabrics in the paintings.

A white ivory-colored jar flags Mary's right side. Three white lilies stem from it. Those lilies are signifying the purity in the moment...the holiness. That holiness is added to with a soft red velvet bag lying before her, on the floor. There is a set of rosary without a crucifix spilling out toward Mary from that bag. Since the rosary is dedicated to Mary, I take it as a gift from God for her future role as the mother of the Christian savior, Jesus Christ. A circular path is achieved around the painting from those rosaries, to the dove, and back to the angel. It is a well-balanced portrayal.

Directly behind the Virgin, there is a bed covered in a dark blue cloth. The bedding derives from extensions of that cloth, originating from two tendrils above the view. They come down to engulf the bed all the way to the floor. Again, David's use of a slightly contrasting shade of blue allowed me to pull from the paintings, all the key elements. Blue is a common motif within "The Annunciation."

Light symmetry is also a factor of both panels. The left has a brighter appearance. I assume that since the presence of the angel, in addition to the open panels of the upper windows, the set of paintings reveals this difference in that manner. In the right panel, Mary is shrouded in a darker light. This darker appearance may be due to the fact that the Holy Spirit is the "light" for that room, in addition to Mary's illumination from behind her head. Mary's illumination appears to be very secondary in the scene.

As I said earlier, perspective lines are implemented to give depth to the work. The only failure that David attained was the bottom shelf on the table, under the bible. That shelf is out of perspective. It took awhile to pick that out though. Aside from that one discrepancy, all elements within the rooms are set beautifully to a multi-point perspective. The main line of sight heads toward the center area between the paintings in a 45-degree pyramidal direction, from the tiles.

David's other paintings from this polyptych are masterpieces such as "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt," "The Crucifixion," "The Nativity," and, "Virgin with Child and Four Angels." I got to see them all. Each one drew my attention away from the Met, and into the scenes. I have truly grown from my visit and will return to this newfound treasure of the arts.
